On October 1st of 1970 I sat at my
kitchen table and put together monthly statements for six customers. Customers
that my dad, Elmer Britton, had cultivated during his employment at A. W. Garlieb Implement. Mr. Garlieb was ready to retire and with his blessing Elmer
took the lessons he had learned and opened his own business in a rented building
on the south side of Huntley, Illinois. The building was pretty crude but with
lots of hard work a parts department and offices were added to the shop area.
99% of the customers of B&K during the 1970’s
were local farmers. The mid to late seventies were economically good for the
farm community. They supported B&K Power and in 1978 Elmer purchased the
property on Harmony Road. A new building was erected on this property in 1980.
B&K moved to this new location in November of 1980.
The 1990’s were a decade of change. The sleepy
country roads were becoming home to commercial and residential developments.
B&K Power changed their product mix to meet the needs of the new residents of
the area while still maintaining equipment, parts and service for long time
customers.
Elmer retired from B&K Power in 2004. He handed
the reigns of the company to me, his daughter, Barbara Christ. Times are still
changing and product mix needs to be adjusted to suit that changing landscape
but please know that B&K Power Equipment will always be “ Large enough to Know,
but Small enough to care”.
